House votes to roll back BLM methane rule, sends American tax dollars up in flames

Statement of Earthworks’ Policy Director Lauren Pagel

February 3, 2017

"Americans deserve better then to see their tax dollars go up in flames. By voting to roll back the Interior Department’s natural gas waste rule, the House of Representatives put the oil and gas industry’s profits ahead of the public’s pocketbook. Without this rule, companies will continue to waste $330 million each year in taxpayer-owned natural gas extracted from public lands owned by all Americans. In the process oil and gas companies will also pollute our communities with carcinogens like benzene, and the climate with methane, a greenhouse gas 86 times more harmful than carbon dioxide."
