TXGN Releases New Report Detailing Impacts of Oil & Gas Pollution on Children, Families in Texas

Today, the Texas Grassroots Network (TXGN), released a new report titled "Oil & Gas Pollution's Impacts on Texas Families” which outlines how oil and gas development in Texas has exacerbated air pollution and public health issues, like asthma and other respiratory illnesses. The report tells the stories of three Texans, including a four-year- old boy, whose health has deteriorated as a result of harmful air pollution from oil and gas activities.

SB 1868 would require local hearings for oil & gas wells proposed within 1,500ft of schools & daycares

Austin -- Late last week Senator Judith Zaffirini (D-21) introduced SB 1868 to require the Texas Railroad Commission to hold a public hearing in the county where an operator seeks to permit an oil and gas well within 1,500 feet of a school or daycare. In 2015, HB 40 effectively removed communities’ power to govern the oil and gas industry within their boundaries in favor of regulation by the state Railroad Commission and Texas Council on Environmental Quality.

Today, Representative Terry Canales (D-40th) introduced HB3403, the “Protect Our Children Act” to grant municipalities the power to govern oil and gas operations within 1,500 feet of a school or daycare. In 2015, HB40 effectively removed municipalities’ power to govern the oil and gas industry within their boundaries in favor of the state Railroad Commission and Texas Council on Environmental Quality.

Toyahvale & Dallas, TX, Nov 3 -- Released today, a new scientific analysis of the system of springs feeding Texas’ Balmorhea State Park in the Chihuahuan Desert indicates that new oil and gas production proposed by Apache Corp. could pollute or otherwise disrupt the springs that make Balmorhea a global tourist destination. The report was authored by hydrologist Tom Myers, Ph.D for the Balmorhea-community group Save Our Springs Too and national environmental group Earthworks.
