98% vote against Colombia’s La Colosa mine

On March 26th 2017, hundreds of residents of Cajamarca poured into the streets to celebrate the results of a popular referendum on mining. Despite setbacks in the organization of the vote in the rural Colombian town, including death threats against the organizers, 98% of the population voted against the La Colosa mine, an open-pit gold project owned by South African company, AngloGold Ashanti.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index is Unsustainable for Communities

Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) recently announced its list evaluating the sustainability performance of the largest 2,500 companies listed on the Dow Jones Stock Market Index. US-based Newmont Mining scored high marks, earning it a spot as one of the world's most sustainable metal mining companies. Given Newmont’s abysmal environmental and human rights track record, this distinction raises the question, “How does DJSI define sustainability?”
