Authority to Deny Mines, Environmental Performance Standards, Taxpayer Protection, Corporate Accountability
On Thursday, October 25th, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton announced that the Bureau of Land Management would revoke the strong 3809 environmental mining rule first published in November 2000, and replace it with much weaker regulations. On Tuesday, October 30th, 2001, the BLM published the new, weak rule in the Federal Register. In doing so, Secretary Norton ignored 97% of public comments, turning her back on Western communities and the environment.

An investigation of hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds near oil and gas production sites.
This report summarizes air quality sampling results for hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic compounds in oil and gas producing areas, as well as residential areas of Monroe, Conecuh and Escambia counties in Alabama. Based on the high concentrations that were measured at some sites, there is a need for a more comprehensive air quality monitoring program in these counties.

When something goes wrong at one of these mines, it is the public's land, water, and wildlife resources that are impacted.

On November 21st, 2000, the Bureau of Land Management published updated surface mining regulations that govern hardrock mining, and its environmental impacts, on the publicly owned lands managed by BLM. At 12 AM on January 20th, 2001, hours before George W. Bush was inaugurated, the rule went into effect. Efforts by the Bush administration to obstruct last minute regulations did not block the mining rule.
