25th Anniversary
25 years ago, Earthworks was founded as Mineral Policy Center.
To celebrate 25 years of protecting communities and the environment from the negative impacts of irresponsible mining, digging and drilling, we are sharing 25 memorable moments from Earthworks’ history.
Each moment will tell a story of an Earthworks achievement or turning point. Many times the storyteller(s) will be the very people who “made” the moment.
All of the memorable moments will help illustrate the fight the protect communities and environment, and the role we played in bringing communities together to preserve our water, our health, our fish and wildlife, and our special places.

Earthworks' Founding Story
25 years ago architect Phil Hocker founded the Mineral Policy Center, which is now Earthworks.
Read and listen to the story of our founding: our first fights, flounders and, of course, victories!
The Protection of Valle Vidal
The Coalition for the Valle Vidal and Earthworks protected the area from development of oil and gas.
In 2006, Congress passed a bill – with no opposing votes -- to prohibit energy and mineral in the Valle Vidal. President George W. Bush signed the bill into law, which declares this precious land and all the living things on it to be permanently protected.
